Taskforce for Durable Existing & Emerging Policies for Carbon Storage

We are an independent, science-driven taskforce tracking and assessing policies that facilitate Paris-aligned carbon storage.

DEEP Taskforce is an independent, science-driven international taskforce established in 2026 to track and assess the compliance-based policies that make durable carbon storage real. Our scope is deliberately narrow: we cover only compliance mechanisms that mandate or directly enable geological-timescale carbon storage. This means we do not track all carbon markets, all climate policies, or all forms of carbon storage. We track what works to permanently store carbon, and the policies that require it to happen.

Carbon Balance Initiative

Carbon Balance Initiative is an independent think tank founded at the University of Oxford, working with academia to develop evidence-based policy pathways to reach the Paris Agreement temperature goals. In partnership with world-renowned research institutions, Carbon Balance translates climate science into practical, bespoke recommendations for policymakers, with the goal of reaching geological net zero for fossil fuel and industrial sectors. Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal

The Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal is an initiative of American University’s School of International Service. It was founded in 2018 in response to growing scientific and political attention to carbon removal technologies and practices. The Institute grew out of the Forum for Climate Engineering Assessment, a separate research initiative dedicated to assessing the social, ethical, political, and legal implications of emerging technologies that fall under the broad rubric of climate engineering. As independent scholars and thinkers housed at an academic institution, we bring robustness and rigor to all our work.
