DEEPTaskforce

About us

An independent, science-driven taskforce focusing on DEEP for carbon storage

A snapshot of who we are and how we conduct our research.

We launched in 2026 as a partnership between three independent research institutions

Policies that require carbon to be stored durably are emerging in different forms across jurisdictions, and decision-makers need a clear view of them. The DEEP taskforce brings that view together in one place. We map both existing and emerging compliance mechanisms for climate-relevant carbon storage, pairing accessible policy summaries with a growing library of research and evidence. By presenting the full range of options, we help governments, researchers and industry understand which instruments could suit their own jurisdiction’s capacities and objectives.

Our leading principles

01 — Scope: Narrow by design

We track only compliance-based policies for climate-relevant carbon storage, not all climate policies, and not for all sinks.

02 — Quality: Rigour and accuracy

Every entry is manually verified by a Taskforce researcher. AI assists in data collection and categorisation, but we ensure that the final product is published by a human.

03 — Partnership: Built on collaboration

We bring together independent research institutions from across the world, in a network of contributors and collaborators.

04 — Geography: Thinking global

We begin tracking policies in Europe and North America and expand as the Taskforce grows. The climate problem is global, and so is our ambition.

DEEPTaskforce operates as an independent body, governed collectively by its member institutions.

Members agree methodology, scope and data standards jointly, apply them consistently across the tracker and library, and review entries regularly so that content stays accurate and current. Summaries are written to present third-party research neutrally. DEEP is editorially independent of the organisations and policies it covers.

  • Carbon Balance Initiative is an independent think tank founded at the University of Oxford, working with academia to develop evidence-based policy pathways to reach the Paris Agreement temperature goals. In partnership with world-renowned research institutions, Carbon Balance translates climate science into practical, bespoke recommendations for policymakers, with the goal of reaching geological net zero for fossil fuel and industrial sectors. • Arizona State University is a public research university, located in Arizona, USA. ASU is force of academic and economic gravity, drawing outstanding faculty from across the globe and talented students from all 50 states and over 165 countries. It has membership in the Association of American Universities and the Carnegie Foundation’s Opportunity University designation.

  • The Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal is an initiative of American University’s School of International Service. It was founded in 2018 in response to growing scientific and political attention to carbon removal technologies and practices. The Institute grew out of the Forum for Climate Engineering Assessment, a separate research initiative dedicated to assessing the social, ethical, political, and legal implications of emerging technologies that fall under the broad rubric of climate engineering. As independent scholars and thinkers housed at an academic institution, we bring robustness and rigor to all our work.
